The Caribbean - Short introduction

The Caribbean comprises 30 islands and archipelagos with dozens of different languages as well as diverse European, African, Chinese, Indian, Jewish and American influences.

Colonized by Europeans since the 15th century, the original inhabitants became extinct and were replaced by enslaved Africans. Marked by that history the Caribbean has become a racial melting pot. Research of Caribbean culture is today a subject of growing interest.

Although the historical development of each of the islands is different, the common goal, especially in respect of art and the culture, is to remove stereotypes and cliches and define the Caribbean from a Caribbean perspective.
